Plan for Rescue Before Your Trip

Before you need to signal for help, one of the best ways to be sure you are found is by taking the time to plan to be found. Don’t leave home without knowing these survival tips. Leave a trip itinerary with a trustworthy and reliable friend. Include times that you expect to be at certain locations. Include your travel route and note your arrival time.

Plans can change; if yours does, notify your friend as it occurs. Detail any imaginable adjustments to your itinerary. Have set meeting places should your party become separated. This will enable rescuers will know where to search if you are missing.

Other helpful information to include in your itinerary are the health and general condition of members of your party, including any medications, a list of your gear including amount of food, water, clothing and shelter materials, and emergency contact information (family members and doctors’ telephone numbers, etc.)

“I have never been lost, but I will admit to being confused for several weeks.” Daniel Boone

Should you arrive at a similar state of confusion and require assistance, there are several ways to signal for help.

You will be able to employ an assortment of items in order to signal for aid. This includes flame, smoke, torches, brightly colored clothing, mirrors, whistles, or battery-powered devices. The ability to calm yourself will enable you to creatively consider ways to alert rescuers to your location. Knowing how to accurately assess your options can save your life.

If you should lose your way, your position should be marked right away. In order to easily identify your position, create a pile of rocks, brush, or break some twigs. Your home base is now established. If you choose to attempt to exit on your own, this is where you’ll come back to make another attempt should your initial effort fail. This will also be the place you wait for rescuers.

Leave a note at this location if you decide to move from it. Tell your plans and your direction of travel. While you journey tag the path at regular points with stones, broken branches, or some other easily recognizable sign to show where you’ve walked. These markings will help search teams determine your location.

The Survival Scoop covers specific signal steps and more survival tips, so check it out for more information.

Best Compact Digital Cameras

The technology behind today?s digital camera is all about the concept of small. The use of technology has caused our world to speed up and in this fast pace people want their gadgets to be accessible. Digital cameras are not the exception to the rule. This desire for accessibility is the major factor behind the birth of a compact edition of digital cameras.

The digital technology is the most revolutionary discovery in the field of photography. It has attracted the world by producing high quality images in limited cost. The compact digital cameras are comparatively smaller in size and have added many special features to their name. They are, no doubt, one step ahead the digital SLR cameras or any other camera models.

The standard proportions of compact digital cameras can roughly be 3.5 W x 2.5 H x 1.0 D. These dimensions can vary a little here and there, depending upon the type, the model and the brand of your compact digital camera. One interesting thing that you must know about the compact digital cameras is that an ideal compact digital camera has to have the certified label of Jeanspocket. A compact camera with this trademark is so compact that you can keep it in the pocket of your jeans, comfortably. It is a newer striking criterion added to the compact digital cams by fast generation of today.

The entire concept behind these compact digital cameras is that they make photography fast and simple without any discomfort due to their large size.

Compact digital cameras offer many other features apart from their small stature. Most compact digital cameras offer multiple scenes, optical zooms, exposure modes and other handy functions. One important thing to keep in mind is that some compact digital cameras have 11 mm or less diagonal sensors which make fairly low noise at ISO 100. Unfortunately at ISO 400 and above the noise of the camera can be quite obvious. Although they are small and fun to look at I recommend any potential buyer take a close look at the features and quality prior to making a purchase.

Most compact digital cameras come with a $200 to $500 price tag. You will find similar amazing functions and features among all brands. Most of the sensor resolutions vary from 3.0 to 8.0 mega pixels. The ultra-compact models are virtually the size of a credit card. At under an inch thick they still include incredible features as high-resolution sensors. Some of the more advanced controls include features such as multiple AF zones, manual settings and sophisticated scene modes.

It would be short sighted of me to not include the drawbacks of compact digital cameras as well as the benefits. Since sensitivity is calculated through ISO, the ISO range of a compact digital camera varies between ISO 50 and 400. SLR cameras, on the other hand, have ISO values in the range of 100 to1600. Because of this compact digital cameras are less sensitive than digital SLR cameras.

There is much advancement in compact digital cameras, as compare to the digital SLR camera. Your job is to conjure up the best one as per your needs after measuring all the pros and cons.

Helpful Tips On Buying A Mountain Bike

Today, mountain biking is extremely popular all around the world and still increasing in popularity. It’s fun, enjoyable, exciting and it keeps you in good physical shape. What’s there not to like?

Of course, with popularity comes more choice, but with so many manufacturers and brands and types and whatnot around, it has become quite a complicated task to choose the right mountain bike. Hopefully, this article will help.

The starting point of buying a mountain bike is to know what kind of riding will you do, so that you can choose the appropriate type. Because bikes are designed for different types of riding (casual, downhill, off-road, and so on), you need to know which type will suit your needs the best. Full suspension, front suspension or no suspension at all?

One of the most important aspects of buying a new mountain bike is choosing the right size. Size is important and it affects how you ride. Here are some general guidelines based on height: People shorter than 5′4″ usually go for 15″ or less, people between 5′4″ and 5′11″ are most comfortable with 17″, people between 5′11″ and 6′2″ prefer 19″, and people taller than 6′2″ choose 21″ or more.

When you’re buying a new bike, you probably want a decent-quality bike that will keep you happy for awhile. Something not to expensive and not to cheap either. You must know that during the year prices can notably fluctuate. The best time to buy is September, because next year’s models come out and prices go down.

There are many different parts of a bike. When looking for quality you have to check out the frame material, quality of the important components such as brakes, derailleurs, shift levers, suspension fork, and so on. As always, you get what you pay for, so don’t be to cheap. A full-suspension bike for less than $200 is not quality.

When you eventually buy a bike, don’t forget on other important pieces of biking gear - helmet, water bottle, tire pump, bike shorts (your behind will be grateful), gloves and glasses.

A Quick Overview On How To Buy A Mountain Bike

In the last decade, mountain biking exploded in popularity. It’s healthy, fun, exciting, and a wonderful way to see the outdoors and keep you fit. It’s enjoyed all over the world by people of all ages, sizes and fitness levels.

Naturally, more demand brings more choices. Today, when there is so many manufacturers, brands, types, shapes and sizes, it can be quite difficult to choose a bike that suits you the best. Hopefully, this short guide will help you out.

The first thing you need to decide on is what type of bike will you buy. Will that be for off-road riding, will you need full suspension, front suspension or no suspension. Bikes are designed for different terrains and purposes. Before buying you should know what kind of riding will you do.

What size bike do I need? Simply put, you need a bike that fits you. Never buy a bike that doesn’t fit you. Common sizes are: 15″ or less (for people shorter than 5′4″), 17″ (for people between 5′4″ and 5′11″), 19″ (for people between 5′11″ and 6′2″), and 21″ and up (for people taller than 6′2″).

When is the best time to buy a mountain bike? If you can, try to avoid buying during the most popular seasons - spring and summer. Prices always fluctuate, depending on the season. The best time to buy is September, because new models arrive and the old stock is discounted. But don’t be to cheap, you do want a decent-quality bike. Remember, mountain bikes are not created equal.

When looking for quality, you have to pay attention to important components like brakes, brake levers, derailleurs, shift levers, suspension, etc. Without quality components you won’t get very far. And just so you know it, a full-suspension bike for $150 is not what you could call a quality product.

Biking gear is also essential. Don’t forget a helmet, water bottle, speedometer, gloves, glasses and a decent pair of padded biking shorts. Trust me, your behind will be thankful.

First of all, Adobe Photoshop is filled with powerful features. The tools it offers will be able to let you do quite a lot of possibilities in image editing. This is what basically makes Photoshop stand out from the rest of the other graphic software in the market today. Basically, the Adobe Photoshop contains all the necessary tools needed to enhance, edit, and alter images.

The tool you will find yourself using most often is the selection tool. The selection tool is probably the most basic of all the tools in the program but also one of the most powerful. The selection tool allows you to select any part of the image where you want changes to take effect. Any areas you have not selected will remain unchanged. When using the selection tool you have options that include the lasso, pen and marquee tool.

A Review of the Canon EOS Rebel T1i

1. The Canon EOS Rebel Ti In Brief

Overall this is a good, if not a great camera, the Canon EOS Rebel Ti is a good, if not great medium range SLR which is relatively affordable and offers 15 megapixels for a higher resolution than many competing models of digital camera. 2. LCD Display

The 3″ LCD screen is faultless and is in fact one of the better LCD displays we’ve seen.

3. Image quality and autofocus are both good, but maybe not quite what you’d expect with a 15 megapixel from Canon. The biggest complaint users seem to have is that the Canon EOS Rebel Ti’s autofocus mechanism is loud. While only a little noisy at ISO 1600, switching to ISO 3200 can be loud enough to startle users the first couple of times. It’s not enough of an issue to be a deal breaker, but it is something photographers should know beforehand. 4. Picture Quality/Live View

Picture quality is good, but again not quite as good as you might want from a 15 megapixel SLR. Overall, the pictures come out more than clear and sharp enough for the casual photographer, though for professional and semi-pro applications the Rebel Ti may not be the answer. The Canon EOS Rebel Ti’s live view stills are no better or worse than any other digital camera on the market, so there’s nothing to report in this department.

5. Processor

The Canon EOS Rebel Ti has an improved digital processor, though users should keep in mind that 15 megapixels means a lot of data and even a faster processor still takes time to handle this workload. Save time is good, but there is definitely room for improvement here. The processing time can be a problem if you need to take continuous shots, however.

6. HD Recorder

In this regard, the Canon EOS Rebel Ti performs exceptionally well. The HD recording features of this camera are superior to almost any other digital camera in its range. At 720p, the HD recording quality is incredible at 30 fps. However, this model records 1080p at only 20fps. However, if you need 1080p resolution, you’re better off with a HD camcorder instead. The Rebel lacks a microphone input and its built in sound recording is less than spectacular - so you can get some amazing 720p HD video, but if you need sound which is good as the picture, you’ll be disappointed.

Conclusion:

Despite its minor faults, the Canon EOS Rebel Ti is a decent choice for casual photographers looking for a digital camera. Its HD recording capabilities are impressive and overall performance is better than many other digital cameras out there. However, at the price you could probably do better and there are other comparably priced models that can provide better quality, if not HD recording quality.

Key Features:

*15.1-megapixels, DIGIC 4 Image Processor

* Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens

*Full HD video capture recording at 1920 x 1080 resolution and HDMI output

*3 inch Clear View LCD with Live View

Pros:

*Lightweight construction

*720p HD video recording at 30 fps, 1080p at 20fps

*Large, high quality LCD screen

*Affordable, readily available upgrades (SDHC, SD cards)

Cons:

*Video output does not have Autofocus

*No microphone input

*Continuous photo shooting is slow at 3.4fps

Historical Facts About Mountain Bikes

Today, mountain biking is one of the top ranked recreation activities that can be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of size, age or ability. It certainly is a great way to keep fit and it can take you to places you probably would never have discovered otherwise.

When did bikes begin to be build as special bikes for off-road riding? Mountain Biking first appeared during the 1970s in California. Tom Ritchey, Gary Fisher, Joe Breeze, Keith Bontrager, and many others were the pioneers who modified chunky bikes and ride them down mountain tracks.

In the early days, mountain biking was perceived as quite a risk. In fact, it was. First mountain bikers were purely downhillers. They would race only downhill, to get up a mountain they used a truck. Because the slopes were more than those first bikes could handle, they started modifying and improving, which lead to the first real mountain bikes.

The first real purpose built mountain bike is generally credited to Joe Breeze. The year was 1978. Other giants in mountain bike development like Gary Fisher, Tom Ritchey and Charlie Kelly soon followed.

Since the 70s much has changed. Technology and popularity has improved tremendously. In the 90s mountain biking really exploded. Few of the pioneers who rode down the rocky trails of Mt Tamalpais, would have believed how widespread their passion would become. Are you aware that mountain biking is an Olympic sport? It is.

Mountain bikes have really improved over the years. From the disc brakes, which are actually quite similar to the brakes on a car or a motorcycle, to sophisticated suspension. There are affordable mountain bikes for any kind of terrain - downhill, cross country, all-mountain, trials or freeride. Depending on your interest and goals, you have many choices today.

It’s true that bicycles have been ridden off-road since their invention, but it wasn’t until the invention of the mountain bike that off-road biking became wildly popular mainstream activity.

Which is the Best Digital Camera for Me?

When thinking of purchasing a digital camera it is easy to become confused when faced with the myriad choices available on the market today. The best way to face this decision is to ask yourself what features or functions of the digital camera are important to you.

Now that you have made the decision to get involved in digital photography, it is time to decide on the camera that suits your needs. Today, you can choose from many types of cameras as well as name brands.

The varieties you will be faced with include SLR Digital Cameras, Digital Compacts, Film Compacts, Direct Vision, etc. Features available vary anywhere from built in camcorders to camera phones. You will undoubtedly be amazed at the choices available to you when you begin your search.

At a formal time we discussed film and digital compact cameras, as well as the AF SLR series, today we are going to discuss the Direct Vision Cams along with a few other models. If you are off to the amateur division photography scene then you may want to look at the line of direct vision cameras offered by Leica. Few of these direct vision action takers offer high quality pictures while its sounds are nearly noise pollution free.

Most photographers use the 35mm camera and Rangefinders have a wonderful one that includes great features. Features include a viewfinder, battery compartment, self-timer, rangefinder, rewind crank, rewind button, lens, PC socket, film speed dial, and so on.

The rangefinder is works to restore viewfinders center images overlaying in the camera. Self-timers are obviously handy for instructing the camera at what time is proper to go off. Some only have a few seconds to time a picture.

Features available on some of the direct vision cameras include hot-shoes, shutter speed dial, wind-on levers, frame counters, and shutter release buttons. Depending on your needs there are a variety of features and functions that are available.

More options include Mega-Pixel Camcorders, Large Formatting Cams, Instant Cams, Imaging Phones, and Hasselblad XPans 2, etc. If you plan on purchasing a camera phone you need to understand that the included camera is not necessarily the best for photography even though you should be able to transfer your photos to your computer. Camera phones are great when you are on the road taking photos and want to put them on your computer quickly. Bluetooth phones make it easy to transfer your photos directly to your computer.

Another option is mega-pixel phone camcorders which are great if you want to create web pages or home movies. Unfortunately these produce lower quality videos which takes them out of the running for creating high productions. It is still quite hand for making movies and playing them back. Most are the size of an Ipod which is incredible when you think of the built in features.

Today you will not find too many professional photographers using instant cameras. At one time most used the familiar Polaroid camera which was one of the most popular cameras on the market. Since there were no photo developing costs there were quite popular with professional as well as amateur photographers. This factor alone was my primary reason for using Polaroid. Enthusiasts of instant cameras can use Fuji?s Instax camera which has taken the place of Polaroid.

Hasselblad has a 35mm camera that is popular. The camera was originally designed by Fuji and can easily switch to a panoramic mode of shot. Hasselblad is an incredible camera and puts you in mind of old-modern technology cameras, since it does more than its history defines. By now we have looked at a variety of the cameras available on the market as well as the accessories available and it is now up to you to decide which will best meet your needs.

What kinds of photos are you hoping to take? What do you hope to do with them? Will you want high or low resolution photos? Are you looking to become a professional photographer or stay in the amateur arena?

Hiking Lightweight - Reduce Your Tent Weight

Backpacking light has become one of the fastest growing trend. Too much weight on your back when you hike actually distracts you from enjoying the outdoors as you should. You feel free, unburdened, and close to nature. A lot of weight can be saved from your tent or shelter.

A lot of good shelter options have been developed even especially when you hike with a partner. You could split the weight of the tent by letting one person carry the fly and poles while the other carried the tent body. But the options have increased in recent years and a two-person tent that weighs four pounds isn’t even considered ultralight.

Tents that are too heavy are still produced even today. Tent makers don’t want to ever see their tents returned for any reason, so it’s easier for them to use heavier, cheaper materials. With normal, common sense care of your tent, you can be using an ultralight shelter that lasts for many years. Tents are one area of lightweight backpacking where the specialty tent makers are far outperforming the mainstream manufacturers.

With the introduction of ultralight silicone-impregnated nylon, 2 person tents are now weighing as little as two pounds. One-person tents are less than two pounds. It’s not just the fabrics that got lighter. Poles went from aluminum to ultralight carbon fiber. A 45″ tent pole can now weigh less than two ounces. You can also use trekking poles are tent poles to save weight. This means that you don’t need to even carry tent poles anymore. Stakes have gone from aluminum to titanium. A 6″ titanium stake is just .2 ounces.

Tarps are a good alternative to tents for ultralight backpackers because they’re very light. It protects you from light rain if you set it up correctly but it’s also a good way to feel closer to nature. A step further would be to use tarp ponchos which doubles as raingear. Using gear that serves multiple purposes is one of the core principles of ultralight backpacking. If you like sleeping under a tarp, but want some extra rain protection, a lightweight bivvy sack or sleeping bag cover can be as light as six to seven ounces. A ground cloth is light so it’s wise to include it in your gear for extra protection as well.

If you need more mosquito protection than a coating of your favorite repellent gives you, you can wear a mosquito head net that weighs just .6 ounces. If the head net is too confining, a square yard of no-see-um netting is only about an ounce, and you can configure it in a number of ways to stay away from your face.

If insects are just about the only concern you have, use a bug bivy. It’s a really doesn’t weigh very much.

Most really light tents aren’t freestanding like your old dome camping tent. But they are easy to set up. The really light tents don’t have a separate fly, so that’s one less thing to set up. Instead the tents rely on well-designed ventilation on all sides.

Consider using a one-person tent if you’re backpacking alone. Since there won’t be anyone to share the burden with, you would want your tent to be as light as possible. If you want one tent to cover all bases, the lightest of the two-person shelters provides a way to pack lighter whether you’re going alone or with a partner.

There are many options available on the market for ultralight shelter so look around to see which one suits your needs.

An ultralight tent doesn’t necessarily sacrifice comfort and you can have comfort both comfort at camp and while hiking with the right kind of tent.
