However, I do not wish to look at different Career ideas for working from home, I just wish to consider the advantages and disadvantages of working from home. This will help people make more knowledgeable decisions about their Career ideas. Firstly, the most obvious advantage of working from home – you get to work when you decide to work, not when somebody else says you need to start work. This is a very attractive element of working from home for a lot of people. It is an especially useful advantage for individuals who have commitments that can sometimes be hard to fit around a work schedule, for example having children, or family who need constant care. Working from home will allow them to organise their timetable around their present commitments. Even when you do not have any commitments to worry about, the thought of being able to work whenever you wish to can be very attractive. However, there is a disadvantage to this. Some individuals may not have the discipline to put in the amount of hours they should be alloting to their work. As a consequence their work will probably suffer, and they might end up losing the job as a consequence. Some people find it very hard to work without a set timetable to follow.

To me another advantage, but for several people this might be a huge disadvantage, working from home means you will not need to deal with as many people as when you work in an office or wherever. For people who are very social and like daily interactions with others, they may find working from home lonely and tedious. This of course may affect job satisfaction. If you are more reserved and can work by yourself unsupervised for hours at a time, then this is not anything you will need to be concerned about.

Another useful advantage of working from home is, well, the fact that you are working from home. No more travelling back and forth, which can only ever be a great thing. You will save money on petrol or train fares. You gain additional time in the day which is no longer spent commuting to and from work. For people who travel long distances to their jobs this could easily equal up to getting an extra hour or so. In some instances even more.

A further disadvantage to working from home – interruptions. You may find it very hard to work from home because of interruptions in your home environment, for example kids. You may find that your mind keeps wandering whilst you have a lack of supervision, and your work may end up not getting done. Make sure if you do work from home you are completely committed to doing exactly that – working from home, not sitting watching the TV instead!
