Digital SLR cameras have brought pro quality photography gear to the masses. But it is important to remember that a professional quality DSLR camera is only one part of what it takes to take beautiful photographs. You will also need to understand how to use your camera and that can be a lot more complicated with a DSLR camera than with a simple point and click.

And I think far more important than understanding the technicalities of how to use your camera is having a good eye. A sense of what will make a good photograph. A good example of this kind of “eye” can be seen when looking closely at these Beautiful Prints by one of the best artistic photographers.

As far as which camera to buy I can recommend a Canon Rebel XTi DSLR. It’s a great SLR camera that has worked well for me without any real issues for approximately 3 years now. It is also rather cheap by the cost standards of pro quality cameras. Of course you should consider that those standards are quite high, it is about $700 even without a lens!

As you learn more on the subject of pro quality cameras you will come to understand that the lens is extremely important. If you are used to point and click cameras then you are most likely used to thinking that the megapixel count is the most important thing but that is not true with DSLRs at all.

With high quality cameras, the lens is what makes the largest difference in the quality of your photographs. Truthfully the topic of lenses is too complicated for me to cover in this article, I just want to make you aware of how important they are and that if you want to get really serious about photography you will need to look into the subject deeply.

Just like with any other skill, you will only become a better photographer with lots of studied practice. You will need to read all about taking pictures and then you will need to take lots of photos experiencing for yourself all of what you have found out!

The best digital SLR cameras can be extremely expensive but you will probably do fine with a less expensive Nikon Digital SLR Camera.
