Disaster Survival
Emergency situations may be complete disarray. However prepared you are, it will usually be a surprise and many people lose their composure, clouding their reasoning and influencing their power to take responsible, considered steps. When it comes to crisis survival, it’s just as imperative that you be psychologically and emotionally prepared as it is to have all the proper supplies.

Of course, every crisis is different and so there isn’t any absolute formula for what to do. However, there are certain things that are universal to all emergencies.

1. Remain calm: This may possibly sound the most frustrating advice with regard to a stressful situation, however emergency survival is dependent heavily upon your own capacity to stay calm and make considered choices. If you can stay relaxed, it is likely your relatives will come to feel calmer as well.

2. Work out your options: You should quickly think about how extreme the crisis is actually and whether or not it is necessary to evacuate. Be emotionally ready to abandon your residence if it is the less dangerous option: your possessions are not worth your life.

3. Alert emergency services: Call 911 when in the United States or 000 if in Australia to request the police, fire brigade or an ambulance. Try to communicate slowly and plainly. Inform emergency services as quickly as possible, as they can usually take some time to reach you.

4. Treat the injured: Ensure you have sufficient emergency supplies to hand, and work rapidly to make sure all wounded people are in a stable condition for adequate emergency survival. To be psychologically and emotionally ready to deal with others, it’s a good idea to do a basic first-aid training course.
Of course, every different type of emergency needs a different emergency survival plan.

In the event of a fire, ensure that you have several clear escape routes. Maintaining a fire ladder close by is also a great idea. Make certain your family knows where the escape routes are, and also have a pre-determined meeting position outside the house if there in case of a fire. If you have youngsters, educate them that smoke rises, and so the ‘get down low and go, go, go!’ motto can be very successful. Of course, have an emergency survival kit ready in case you need to evacuate quickly.

Crisis survival in an earthquake is a different issue altogether. Most injuries that take place in earthquakes occur as the result of falling furniture, fire or gas leaks. To prepare your property, connect shelves, cupboards, fridges as well as televisions as safely as possible on the floor or walls. Additionally, be sure any gaseous items (stoves, water boilers, air conditioners, gas bottles, etc) are safe and protected. When the earthquake strikes, be emotionally prepared to gather your loved ones in a main room that has been optimised for harm minimisation.

Emergency survival depends not only on emergency resources, but also on staying emotionally prepared for an emergency to take place and achieving an excellent knowledge of what to do in a hazardous scenario.
