Make Your Garden Attractive To Wild Birds

Posted at 8:46 pm under Bird Migration

You can attract the wild birds in lots of different ways. An easy way is to give them a safe place to eat and the food they enjoy. Bird feeders are the best way of providing food for them. They are really helpful to the birds during the winter when food is hard to find.

You can set up feeding stations with food for different species. Finches love thistle seeds so you can buy a specially designed feeder to hold these tiny seeds. Prevent spillage and keep seeds dry by using tube feeders. You could also use a window bird feeder so that you can watch the birds from inside your home.

You can purchase bird feeders specially designed for goldfinches, woodpeckers and hummingbirds. Place close to your bird house somewhere safe. Check the food in the bird feeder daily to make sure it is dry and mold free. Spilled food around bird feeders will attract ants and wasps so make sure you clean it up every day.

Feeding during the winter is most beneficial for wild birds but shortages occur during other seasons as well. You can help the birds by putting out food all year around which will help when shortages occur. Put out suitable food for fledglings during the breeding season as they can be severly affected by food shortages.

Provide water in the form of water pans or bird baths which also provides a safe place for the birds to clean their feathers and preen. Some birds prefer water at ground level, others prefer to bathe high above ground so provide this by placing container at different levels. Containers should only be filled to a few inches and should be placed some way away from the noise around bird feeders. Wild birds will be attracted to the sounds of running water. A water dripper on your bird bath will attract the birds and also deter mosquitoes from laying eggs in the water.

Wild birds will feel much more secure in a natural environment which you can easily provide. Wild flowers and trees can be allowed to grow wild in an area of the garden to make them an attractive and safe place.
