So You Think You Know How To Buy A Good Digital Camera?

Posted at 2:22 am under Digital Camera

It can be very difficult finding the right present for a kid. Knowing what he will like and what he will not isn’t easy usually. If you’re set to buy a digital camera for a kid, make sure it meets some or all of the criteria below, so you have a good chance that he’ll like it.

The first thing that you should keep in mind while combing through reviews is that you should never trust any reviews that are in any way connected with a manufacturer of cameras. The only thing that they will reveal is what the good points of the camera happen to be and will not mention any potential negatives. Well of course you are going to be bombarded with all the wonderful things about a digital camera if you are reading something from the manufacturer because they are looking to boost sales.

Another criteria that kids take into consideration is whether the digital camera looks good or not. The size of the screen is less important. They will care less if the screen size is small or big, or if the resolution is 2 or 3 megapixels.

You need to be made aware of any potential issues that may have so that you are certain that you are getting the best possible deal. Promotional information created by camera manufacturers are simply trying to sell you on the good points of a camera so that you will purchase their product.

The number of megapixels determine the maximum resolution of your shots. Simply put, it is the level of detail you can capture in a photograph. Long story short, if you take pictures to publish on your blog or Facebook profile you should settle for 2-3 megapixels. If you plan to make high quality printouts on formats wider than an A4 paper you must go for a higher number of megapixels, usually 5 or above.

Don’t get hyped about the digital zoom advertised by the camera: it’s useless. You should only care about the optical zoom: the higher, the better. A 3-5x figure will usually suffice an average amateur photographer, but if you can get a better one, go for it. Digital zoom is the only one you will ever use.

Another important point is how easy it is to use the digital camera. The photos should be taken quickly. Anyway, considering how experienced today’s kids are with technology, this shouldn’t be a major problem. They will learn how to use them much faster than you would.

Unfortunately you cannot check this on a presentation brochure or in an online shop, you will have to get a hands-on experience. Go to a local retailer and ask for one. Check how easily you can handle it

As you can see, you can find something at almost any price. Get them something cheaper, that fits all the above requirements, and will allow them to take their first steps in photography.
