Pocket Digital Cameras Explained - Panasonic Lumix DMCFH20K

If you search for digital cameras on in Google and you’ll find hundreds, if not thousands of different models and manufacturers. Their prices can range from as high as 25,000 dollars or as low as 30, depending on where and who you buy from. The big problem is that the majority of us can’t afford a 25,000 dollar camera and 30 dollar one isn’t likely to provide very good photos. As can be a pain in the neck, finding the right type of camera will require you to do a bit research so that you are sure that the camera you are interested in will do everything that you want it to do.

Digital cameras can be divided into three differing categories. A lot of people have a lot of varying names for these categories but the most common name for the economical ones are pocket or point and shoot. The midrange cameras are often called bridge cameras, and the professional grade ones belong to the SLR family. Those in the DLSR category can run as high as $25,000. Pocket digital cameras are the the ones that you will most often notice others using because they are relatively inexpensive. The more expensive ones are usually for wealthier users and professional photographers.

Likely the soundest of reasons to order a point and shoot digital camera is that it does not require a degree in photography to get one of them to do what it needs to. Take it out of the box, turn it on, point and shoot! With a camera similar to the DMC-FH20K it really is that easy.

There are some other advantages of using point and shoot cameras that make them a better choice for the newbie photographer. They are relatively cheap compared to the more expensive bridge, and DSLR units. They can be more sturdy and are less likely to break if they are bumped around a little bit. There is also no guesswork involved in using the them as well. When shooting photos for the web and recording Youtube videos they are more than enough.

Pocket cameras also have their downsides. One such issue with them is that they do not handle fast movement well at all. If you try to photograph a sprinting child, or a diving bird, you will likely be underwhelmed with the outcome. If you are looking to take images of rapidly moving objects you will likely be better off investing in a bridge camera which will likely run you somewhere around $400 to $1000

Photography can be a great way to spend a little time and freeze memories forever. There are very few places that I will not take one of my cameras along with me. If you or someone know is possibly becoming interested in photography and you’d like to get one as a gift a very good one to start with is a point and shoot camera similar to the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH20K. Digital cameras like these are tough, portable, and will take great photographs for the amount of money you’ll spend. The best thing about them is if you don’t decide to pick up photography as a hobby, you won’t have spent a week’s paycheck in a device you might not use that often.

There is much more information that you should take into account before going out and ordering a digital camera like the Lumix DMC-FH20K. You can find more information about point and shoot digital cameras in general and even links to owner reviews for good digital cameras at my camera information site

How Digital Cameras Work

An electronic digital camera works a lot like film camera in that light comes in through the lens and it is captured to develop a picture. The way the image is captured is what makes a digital camera totally different compared to a film camera. On a film camera, you press the shutter button which opens the shutter letting in the light. The light entering the lens is exposed to the film and results in chemical reactions on the film to create your photograph. In a digital camera the image is captured using an image sensor that converts the light rays into electronic signals which are then kept in a file inside buffer memory.

The light detector or image sensor is known as charged couple device (CCD) and it is comprised of individual light sensitive picture elements typically referred to as pixels. Digital cameras are often measured in megapixels or millions of pixels. A camera which has a 3000 x 2000 array of pixels on the image sensor would contain 6,000,000 pixels and would be known as a 6 megapixel camera. As soon as the light hits the CCD it breaks it down to the millions of pixels and measures the amount of light and color to get a number for every pixel. Your digital picture is actually a long string of numbers that’s stored at a file in memory. The LCD screen on the back of the camera shows you the picture that the CCD is capturing.

Digital photographs must be compressed or the file size is enormous and take up way too much memory. The most typical compressed format is JPG which stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group. The higher the amount of photo information is kept the greater the picture quality and the bigger the file. The more compressed the photo is, the lower the quality and the smaller the file size. The smaller file size makes for shorter load times plus you can store more photos in memory. You do sacrifice quality however.

The fact that digital images are stored digitally ensures they are easier to store, share and manipulate. When you open a photo inside an editor such as Photoshop, you’ll be able to change the quality of the photo by simply clicking on a setting. When you do this it changes the numbers which the pixels are storing to generate the effect. For example, if you need to make the picture 10% brighter, the image editor would change the pixel numbers by 10 percent to show increased light or brightness.

Some digital camera models have built-in effects and you may produce a photographic effect inside the camera right after you take the picture. Something you can’t do with film cameras.

Taking the Mystery out of Digital Camera Lenses

With the wide array of cameras available today, you can be easily tempted to spend between a hundred and several thousand dollars for a digital camera. How do you know which one is best for you? Some features will be ‘must-haves’ while other features may never get used. With this article, I plan to clarify some of the mysteries about various digital camera features. This article is one in a series of many that will help you make the most educated purchase you can.

Let’s look at a handful of basic digital camera features that will sound familiar to you. What type of exposure settings are available? How much zoom should you look for? what is the difference between digital and optical zoom? What is image stabilization and do you need it? There are many more digital camera features that you should review before making your decision, but for now this is plenty to discuss. Look for other articles reviewing more digital features.

Most photographers are happy to let their digital camera automatically select exposure control. This means that the camera will automatically select the exposure control and/or the aperature setting. If you grew up setting these controls yourself on your film camera, or of manual override of those controls is important for your photography, then be sure to look for manual override on the feature list for your camera possibilities.

A zoom lens is actually several different lenses or lens elements. With multiple lens combinations, the focal length can be varied resulting in bigger or smaller images appearing on the film or digital imaging surface. A zoom feature can help you frame a shot to make it appear artistically unique, and it also brings you closer to your subject. With a good camera zoom, you can quickly switch from a wide angle to a close - up shot without changing your location. A standard focal length is typically about 35mm. This gives you a generic “snapshot” view of your subject. Common zoom ranges of 3x will take that focal length up to 105mm. This range is suitable for most hobbyists or casual photographers. However if you need even more zoom, or would like to do wide angle photography, look for ranges of 24 or 28mm on the low end, to

If you are wondering what the difference between optical and digital zoom is, it’s pretty basic. Optical zoom will actually give you more detail about the subject matter when the zoom is employed. The lens elements bring you closer to your subject allowing more detail to enter the camera’s lens. With digital zoom, however, the image that arrives is enlarged, but no additional information is being gathered. if you want the best detail or are interested in having larger format prints made from your photos, always be sure to take your photos using the best optical zoom available to that frames your subject well.

Making a decision about the best digital camera for your needs is easy when you understand all the options available to you. You can save money, anxiety and stress by making a list of the features you feel are most important and then comparing to the available cameras and price points you see at your local stores. Save money and save stress by understanding your purchasing needs ahead of time.

Before shopping for Olympus digital cameras, be sure to read more of Adrian’s reviews at Olympus EPL 2 Review. Ease the anxiety of choosing by laying out the straight dope, such as Olympus EPL1 vs EPL2 before you buy.

Hybrid Cameras Explained

Hybrid cameras, also known as mirror less cameras, are a new strain of camera that combine the compactness of your compact digital camera together with the image quality of a digital single lens reflex camera. The modern hybrid cameras don’t have a single lens reflex mirror removing some of the bulk of a DSLR, but have a larger image sensor than your standard compact digital for better photos. A hybrid camera also does not have a normal viewfinder as in a DSLR, but rather uses an LCD screen or an electronic viewfinder that can be purchased separately. The hybrid cameras have interchangeable lenses similar to a DSLR, making them versatile enough to get many types of shots. They also take incredible HD video in 780p or 1080p format.

Hybrid cameras are the answer to that middle market of customers who do not want to put money into luxury DSLRs, but would like to get better quality pictures than a compact digital. The hybrids are compact enough to transport around without difficulty. On many models, you are able to instantly record HD video without dealing with a menu. Most models run in the $300 - $1,000 range, which makes them very reasonably priced to many people.

Olympus and Panasonic use what is called a micro four thirds format for interchangeable lenses. It is an attempt to make a standard format for digital camera lenses making it possible to change with advanced DSLR lenses. Micro four thirds refer to the ratio of the image sensor, which is a 4 X 3. This size is smaller than an average 35mm, but about 10 times larger than a standard digital compact. The increased size and quality allow the photographer to shoot in lower light without the graininess connected with smaller image sensors.

Many major camera brands have come out with their own version of a hybrid camera. Panasonic led the way with the Lumix G1, then came Olympus with the PEN series. Sony announced the NEX 3 and 5. Nikon and Canon have plans to create hybrids very soon.

With all the hype surrounding the modern hybrid cameras, it remains to be seen if the marketplace for this kind of camera will take off. Sales have steadily increased since 2008 and it’s predicted to take off by 2012.

Hybrids provide you with the best of both worlds. They’re compact enough to carry around easily and powerful enough to take great photos.

Why You Should Embrace Black and White Digital Photography

It’s interesting how sometimes older technologies or art forms take on an even greater value when they are made obsolete by the new and modern. This is certainly true of black and white photography. When color photography came on the scene, it seemed the days of black and white in both video and photography were over forever.

You can experiment with black and white and gather the responses of friends and family to learn how to utilize the subtle but powerful artistic nuances that seem to come with black and white photography almost unconsciously. The digital camera has ushered in a whole new era of black and white photography. So if you are evolving your artistic photography style and portfolio, including some experimentation with black and white will do a lot to improve your work.

You see the form used even in otherwise non artistic settings like wedding portfolios or anniversary pictures. That is because of that emotional and romantic power that black and white conveys. So if you are evolving your artistic photography style and portfolio, including some experimentation with black and white will do a lot to improve your work.

Black and white also focuses the eye on the emotional center of the piece. Probably the best subject for black and white photography is the human face. In even a tranquil expression, the viewer can see such a vast range of expression in the eyes, the tilt of the head, the subtle wrinkles or peculiarities of the face and the focus of the gaze.

Black and white pictures will be scary in some instances, but you will be able to use it like you would color. You will learn how to use the film to help others pay attention to the finer details like the shapes and lines. This will also help with the contrast in very dark areas. That is something that all photographers wish to get accustomed to. Once you do get accustomed to it you will feel great pride and great joy in the B&W pictures that you snap You will learn to love it.

Digital Cameras - Wildlife and Landscape Photography - Catching The Animals By Surprise

Landscape photography is widely popular. I am sure if you look around your home you will see at least two landscape prints that spoke to you. Photography is an art that has a message. As a photographer you have to find the message you want to portray. If you specialize in landscape photography you might think your task is easy to complete. As with any photography you have to pay attention to the details, the lighting, shadows, subject, and the equipment.

Black and white landscape photography is the hardest section to attain true artistry because you are not relying on the colors as much as the lights and shadows the image will create. Composition is very important. Composition in photography means to look for sharp edges, tones and textures. The basis of black and white photography is getting the camera to see what your eye sees in color; to bring the highlights and shadows forward with the angle of the picture. Typical subjects for black and white photography are buildings and water.

When landscape photography is your subject in color you will need to have contrast between the colors. If the sky is blue and you have blue water below chances are the picture is not going to have the contrast you are hoping for. Like black and white photography you need to have definition or composition in the shot. You will need to take a few minutes to set up the shot and perhaps take several frames before being satisfied. Color photography takes less skill than black and white photography so if you have master the last you will succeed at the first.

You will also want to think about color and tones. Most people look for spectacular colors of nature to make their photograph beautiful. You will want to use color to give the pictures added sparkle, however you will also want to learn to use the colors to enhance and not distract you from the lines of the pictures. In fact, if they are too intense, try simplifying things but cutting out color completely-shoot in black and white.

If you are choosing a larger subject such as a deer or bear you will want to stay far enough away to get the shot, and not draw attention to yourself. Bears are dangerous creatures, but they can be photographed if you use common sense and don’t tread upon their territory. Wildlife photography and thus the photographers have a code of ethics when attaining the perfect shots. Wildlife photography is a waiting game for the perfect picture to sprint across your viewfinder. It takes patience and a lot of practice, but the reward of having a family member or friend go, ” where did you get that photograph? I have got to have one,” will sweeten the deal.

Digital Photography and Weddings - Using Digital Cameras For Wedding Pictorials

When people get sentimental, they usually flip albums and look at the pictures that depict the things that happened in their lives. These pictures are not simply pieces of colored papers with images for they can trigger deeply-seated emotions. Emotions vary depending on the memories attached to these images seen and preserved.

Today, people are more dependent on their computers than ever before. With computers, they can easily upload their wedding pictures and share them with family and friends all over the world. You do not have to rely on snail mails just to send your pictures. They are being sent and viewed the minute you have them in your computer.

If you want to take a picture of a couple or any intended target, make sure that the background is good and the environment is not so crowded. If there is a nice background but it is hard to focus on the couple, you may shoot them from shoulder up. If some of the guests are wearing glasses, they can be advised to stand tilt their heads a little down or sideways to avoid the glaring effect that normally appears when the flash is used.

Glasses tend to cause reflections in photos. May it be an eyeglass, window or wine glasses. One way or another, they will cause a reflection or brightness to reflect back on the camera it is included in the picture. To avoid this, the position of the camera can be altered so that it will not directly hit the glass. The photo can be taken sideways or downwards but never on eye level.

Persons being photographed should not always be looking at the camera. And they do not have to be smiling at the lens too. One way of doing it is to wait for the right moment so that you can have a candid shot at them. You will see that catching persons on film when they are in their candid state is much better than having them wearing a fixed expression. Candid moments make photos look real and natural.

Keep a copy of your best works so you can use and reuse the techniques that made your viewers smile and appreciate your creation more. You can do this by saving albums on your personal computer to free up the space in your memory card. You may also use other software to enhance the quality of the prints to be made. Photography is truly a wonderful art. Wedding is a wonderful event. The union of these things will trigger emotions and memories in the long run more so if images are captured and preserved well. They all depend on your camera and your love for this art and the couple.

There are several different things to take into consideration when selecting a digital camera. But an informed decision is a wise decision. From personal experience I can tell you the D3100 from Nikon is the best. To learn more about the D3100 click on one of those links.

Facts About Digital Cameras - What to Look for When Choosing Your First camera For Digital Photography

The central part of a DV camcorder is the CCD, or Charge Coupled Device. This sensor creates a video picture by recording the light intensity to recognize an image or shape, along with the color levels to reproduce a full color picture. There are several tape based DV camcorders that have both color eyepiece viewfinders and a flip out TFT LCD screen to view the action as well as the previous recorded footage.

A CCD and CMOS sensor works the same way at first, by converting the light electrical charges into photosites. Simply put it is to think that a digital camera works in such a way as thinking that the millions of tiny solar cells, each of which forms a part of the whole image.

Since the images that a digital camera capture are in electronic form, it is a language recognized by computers. This language is called pixels, tiny colored dots represented by ones and zeros that make up the picture that you just took. Just like any conventional camera, a digital camera is furnished with a series of lenses that focus the light and creates the image that you want to capture.

If you’re a photo freak, be sure that you have enough memory in your camera to take all the wacky, freaky, funny and just about any photo you can. Think 512MB if you”re a photo junkie and takes pictures of just about anything.

Most of the latest cameras allow you to capture digital still images onto a removable flash memory card. The most popular media is SD or MMC, but Sony and Samsung cameras often capture to a memory stick.

If your video camera doesn’t offer still image capabilities, you can always perform a capture of the screen in your editing program. Always remember that the image resolution when capturing a still this way will always be 640X480, which is actually less than 1 MB, or Mega Byte.

Digital Photography - A Review of the User Friendly Nikon D3100 DSLR Digital Camera

At one point DSLR cameras were unnecessary for people who just took pictures of people, places or things when it necessitated pics. A less costly SLR was more than suited for their needs and the less they had to spend, the better. Unfortunately it doesn’t take too long to see the constraints of those devices if the condition for taking pictures is not perfect. You can always take your chances and hope you luck out but chances are you’ll end up with a disappointing low quality camera.

Hoping to change people’s minds about the need for a DSLR camera, Nikon released the D3100. Basically, they’re betting and hoping people will pay a higher price for a camera that is high quality and easy to use. For the most part they’re relying on the 14.2 megapixels and HD video option to boost sales. A camera can look great but that never matters. It’s how well it functions and what it does that mean anything in the long run. I’ve seen and used cameras that looked great but when it came to performing, they were terrible.

It seems that every tech enthusiast needs to own the latest gadget on the market the second it comes it out. They always hope it will live up to their expectations. The iPhone 4 is a great example of this. So many people went out any bought it and got all the problems that came along with it Were people thinking about potential problems with the device? No, of course they weren’t. A couple things are proven here. People will shell out money for the best and people are impulsive.

I would say the D3100 is a great camera for those who would consider themselves an amateur photographer. I’m certainly not a professional photographer and I had no problems recording videos or taking pictures. Whether it’s a good camera for professional photographers isn’t something I personally can say. As an amateur photographer I am more than happy with the D3100.

The price tag might be a bit much for some people and is certainly the major limitation of the camera. If you’re not someone who is a stickler for the highest possible quality then this isn’t the camera for you. If you are the type who wants to take pictures in many different conditions and under many different circumstances then this may be a worthwhile investment for you.

Digital Cameras - Choosing the Best Printers, Lenses and Filters For Digital Photography

Just having a camera is not going to get you the best pictures. Most of us who take photos are amateurs in the art world, but with the right equipment our photography can be elevated to a new height. Lenses are important especially when you settle on a medium you will train in. Most photographers choose one area of photography to specialize in.

Lets talk about filters that blur a photograph. When you are taking a picture of a waterfall at the bottom where the water rises in a cloud you can add a filter to create the cloud in the picture. Cameras don’t always see what the eye sees. In some cases it can have a high resolution to depict the actual water drops rather than the cloud, so adding a filter to your lens can help create the effect your eye sees.

Other filters such as the UV protector guard against the harsh rays. Along with the UV filter you should have a polarizer. The polarizer is used in photography when you are taking a shot into direct sunlight or other light. It will help balance out the photograph so that you don’t get the washed out look. Other filters can give you the washed out effect if you feel your photography would speak more.

Some people go by the looks when they are choosing a digital photography printer. Because of this, many companies today hire top-notch artists and designers. People want equipment that looks good. They want to buy a digital photography printer that lets them express themselves through its sleekness and overall appearance.

Photography in the world of panorama is another way to take spectacular landscape photos. The panoramic lens allows you to widen the photograph, especially with a digital camera. If there is a mountain range or glacier that you wish to get the whole picture without pasting them together in Photoshop the panoramic lens is the best way to go.

The use of filters in photography not only allows you to have special effects in a photograph to create something new and different, but it can help enhance the shot by adding color or dampening the natural effects of light. Photography has many types of equipment that require skill and knowledge making it a wonderful hobby or profession. If you need a hobby, photography allows you to be creative.

There are many things to take into account when choosing a digital camera. But an informed choice is a wise choice. From my own personal experience I can tell you the D3100 From my own Nikon is top quality. To learn more about the D3100 click on one of those links.
