Digital Camera Intelligence For The Non Scientific Minded.

There is heaps of information that exists in the world regarding digital cameras. What they are and do, and most importantly which is the top one for my family. Sure you can contribute endless time on web pages grinding over one web page after another, but who has the drive to do that?

Taking pictures is not my profession and I am not a master at it. However I do love to take pictures and capture all the family memories that I can. I also enjoy helping others and making it easy for them to learn about things that can be very complicated. Sure you can go out and just pick up the first camera that a salesmen points out without understanding what it does or how to use it, but is that honestly the best choice?

Lets take a look at some of the typical technical terms that you are likely to encounter in your mission for a digital camera. There is no getting around the fact that the main stat that is talked about will be megapixels. This simply refers to how many small individual dots a photo will have. The more the better but don’t forget that megapixels will make your images look better, especially when blown up to a giant size. However if your digital camera is suffering in other specs such as poor zoom, focus, or flash technology all the megapixels in the world will not make your pictures look awesome.

Now that we have megapixels down lets discuss zoom. Zoom is your cameras ability to take objects that are far away and make them appear closer. There exists more than one type of zoom and they are utterly different. Your camera’s optical zoom rating is the real deal zoom, how far out your camera can extend without losing picture quality. Zoom rating of 2x for example, would mean the lens on your camera should make targets look up to twice as close as they really are. The Other zoom is named digital zoom and is a little neat to have but not really worth all that much since it is simulated with software and the more digital zoom you use the uglier your picture will turn out. So optical zoom awesome, digital zoom okay when used in small doses.

Flash time. Your flash is pretty simple, it is an artificial light that goes off before the shutter on your camera so you can see dark targets. Not much to discuss on flashes as they are not talked about much, just make sure the camera you are considering has a good flash rating and good light detection software in it. Most digital cameras that you will find have an auto detection system used most of the time instead of you manually switching the flash on and off. Poor software can drive you mad and make your pictures look either way too dark or too bright.

We have gotten the end of the basics that you require when researching about digital cameras. You now have an idea what people will be talking to you about and what to expect in your new digital camera. You can buy your camera either in a store or through an online vendor, I suggest websites as they usually have better deals and sales. Remember that when using your digital camera you need to have fun and enjoy what your doing not just waste all your time worrying about taking every picture you can.

Why You Should Embrace Black and White Digital Photography

It’s interesting how sometimes older technologies or art forms take on an even greater value when they are made obsolete by the new and modern. This is certainly true of black and white photography. When color photography came on the scene, it seemed the days of black and white in both video and photography were over forever.

You can experiment with black and white and gather the responses of friends and family to learn how to utilize the subtle but powerful artistic nuances that seem to come with black and white photography almost unconsciously. The digital camera has ushered in a whole new era of black and white photography. So if you are evolving your artistic photography style and portfolio, including some experimentation with black and white will do a lot to improve your work.

You see the form used even in otherwise non artistic settings like wedding portfolios or anniversary pictures. That is because of that emotional and romantic power that black and white conveys. So if you are evolving your artistic photography style and portfolio, including some experimentation with black and white will do a lot to improve your work.

Black and white also focuses the eye on the emotional center of the piece. Probably the best subject for black and white photography is the human face. In even a tranquil expression, the viewer can see such a vast range of expression in the eyes, the tilt of the head, the subtle wrinkles or peculiarities of the face and the focus of the gaze.

Black and white pictures will be scary in some instances, but you will be able to use it like you would color. You will learn how to use the film to help others pay attention to the finer details like the shapes and lines. This will also help with the contrast in very dark areas. That is something that all photographers wish to get accustomed to. Once you do get accustomed to it you will feel great pride and great joy in the B&W pictures that you snap You will learn to love it.

Digital Cameras - Wildlife and Landscape Photography - Catching The Animals By Surprise

Landscape photography is widely popular. I am sure if you look around your home you will see at least two landscape prints that spoke to you. Photography is an art that has a message. As a photographer you have to find the message you want to portray. If you specialize in landscape photography you might think your task is easy to complete. As with any photography you have to pay attention to the details, the lighting, shadows, subject, and the equipment.

Black and white landscape photography is the hardest section to attain true artistry because you are not relying on the colors as much as the lights and shadows the image will create. Composition is very important. Composition in photography means to look for sharp edges, tones and textures. The basis of black and white photography is getting the camera to see what your eye sees in color; to bring the highlights and shadows forward with the angle of the picture. Typical subjects for black and white photography are buildings and water.

When landscape photography is your subject in color you will need to have contrast between the colors. If the sky is blue and you have blue water below chances are the picture is not going to have the contrast you are hoping for. Like black and white photography you need to have definition or composition in the shot. You will need to take a few minutes to set up the shot and perhaps take several frames before being satisfied. Color photography takes less skill than black and white photography so if you have master the last you will succeed at the first.

You will also want to think about color and tones. Most people look for spectacular colors of nature to make their photograph beautiful. You will want to use color to give the pictures added sparkle, however you will also want to learn to use the colors to enhance and not distract you from the lines of the pictures. In fact, if they are too intense, try simplifying things but cutting out color completely-shoot in black and white.

If you are choosing a larger subject such as a deer or bear you will want to stay far enough away to get the shot, and not draw attention to yourself. Bears are dangerous creatures, but they can be photographed if you use common sense and don’t tread upon their territory. Wildlife photography and thus the photographers have a code of ethics when attaining the perfect shots. Wildlife photography is a waiting game for the perfect picture to sprint across your viewfinder. It takes patience and a lot of practice, but the reward of having a family member or friend go, ” where did you get that photograph? I have got to have one,” will sweeten the deal.

Why You Should Use A Flash Diffuser with Your SLR

As a budding photographer, you probably have at several digital SLRs and multiple lenses and an Olympus Flash. Although you probably take most of your pictures during the daytime, you do, or will eventually, take some in low-light scenarios, like bars and lounges.

Because of this, using an Olympus Flash with your Olympus camera is important, as is learning how to use it properly. There are times when not using a flash works, but it is generally an important addition to your photography equipment.

The problem arises when you start using your on-camera flash. On my Olympus E-510, the internal flash is extremely weak. As a result, I bought an Olympus Flash FL-50, which has really improved my photography style.

Unfortunately, this Olympus flash is still too harsh and results in sharp shadows, which does not result in pictures I showing other people. For example, if you snap a picture of a person leaning against a wall, the flash can create a black shadow on the wall, which makes the person look wider than they really are. It was time to get a flash diffuser, and my sto-fen omnibounce is now always stuck to my flash. It is a little white box that is perfect for spreading the light around.

Flash Diffuser to the Rescue

Before I purchased a diffuser, my external flash was too bright.

What the flash diffuser does is “diffuse” the light. It spreads the flash light around so that it will not hit your subject immediately. By spreading the light, it also creates a more natural touch, which is great to have with flashes. Furthermore, it enables you to give your image a softer look without reducing the flash power. This aids with any fill flash issues you may have previously had.

Buying a Flash Diffuser

As I previously mentioned, I used an omnibounce diffuser, which results in a more professional job than the diffuser with my Olympus FL-50. There are also larger diffusers as well that can be used with your Olympus Flash.

The author is a budding photographer, and uses different techniques to improve the effect of his Olympus Flash.

Four Things To Look For When You Buy Your Olympus Flash

Your off-camera Olympus Flash allows you to greatly increase the quality of your photographs. Personally, I use an Olympus E-510, although you might have another camera, so replace Olympus with the type of your SLR. I ordered the Olympus Flash FL-50 soon after I bought my SLR, and I quickly saw a tremendous improvement in my photographs. There was only one reason for this: off-camera flashesvgrant you artistic versatility.

There exist many other flashes that you can attach to your SLR. Keep in mind though, it is best to buy the flash for your camera make. It will probably be more expensive, but it has properties that some generic flashes do not have. And if you really want to have better pictures, using a flash with an Olympus camera is worth the extra cost.

So what traits should you ask about when getting a flash? There are many types of camera flashes, that it is quite difficult to know if what you have is what you want.

Below is a list of 4 things that you can keep in mind.

1 - Size: How big is your flash?. Usually, the larger the camera flash the brighter it is. This is extremely useful as it can reach much further. Unfortunately, this might make it expensive. If you know you will only shoot indoors, then you may not require a strong flash. But, if you want to use it in concert halls, then you probably need a very powerful flash. Tiny camera flashes do exist, and these are easier to carry than the bigger flashes, as they are easy to fit inside your pocket.

2 - Speed: What is the smallest shutter rate your flash will work at? Your complete image sensor must be exposed when the flash lights up. If the frame shutter speed is too fast, and your flash does not synchronize to it, then this does not occur, and the photograph can not expose correctly. This is partly a feature of the SLR as well, so please make sure to sync both of these features!

3 - Controllability: What forms of options do you desire? Personally, I enjoy being able to change everything manually, because this provides me extra control, and because I find it fun. Always make sure that you are aware of whether the camera flash is only completely automatic, or has a manual configuration.

4 - Auto-focus: Do you need some infra-red for your camera? In extremely low light scenarios, your camera may have issues auto-focusing. Several SLRs have in built capabilities, in the form of infra-red. Other cameras don’t, and it may be worth testing to discover if the flash you want to purchase has this functionality. My flash has this, and is a useful since my camera doesn’t.

If you keep these in mind, then the first Olympus Flash you buy will be decent. And once you have some experience with camera flashes, you can always upgrade.

Mark Chams is an enthusiastic photographer, and enjoys using his olympus flash to create better pictures.

Capturing The Best Images In Bad Illumination Conditions

New photographers will want to know right away How To Capture The Best Shots In Low Light Conditions. Photographing in the dark is a little more difficult than photographing in normal light conditions. When this is done incorrectly, the photos will be under-exposed and the prints will be useless. A good camera and experience is essential for obtaining the right result.

Point and shoot types of cameras are not as effective as DSLR sensors as a high quality sensor is needed to get optimum results in less than satisfactory illumination. Nighttime photography requires that better quality noise filters be used as well as high sensitivity models. Back illuminated sensors or backlit technology is a feature that the newer models have. Newer models therefore make less noise and have enhanced sensitivity.

Another word for a camera’s sensitivity is ISO. ISO is crucial for taking pictures late at night or indoors when it is dark. People should watch out for high ISO settings as this could result in much more noise being included in the image.

To reduce noise, one would require noise reduction technology. The best camera to choose in terms of ISO and noise is one with more than 800 ISO and a lower megapixel count. Keeping the megapixels low will ensure that the demands are not too high on the sensor. It will also keep the noise down.

Blurring on hand-held cameras will be reduced with the use of optical image stabilization. With small movements it is likely that blurring will occur. Illumination can be optimized with the use of slower shutter speeds. As there is a possibility that there will be increased movement one would need a tripod and ISO.

Turning the flash off and having a camera with a fast lens can achieve good images. Sufficient light is essential when it comes to How To Capture The Best Shots In Low Light Conditions. An F/4 lens is good and these usually come with DSLR models. This figure should be as low as possible for better results.

You can take a look at the new Nikon SB-700 speedlight to work with your low light photography. By getting a good high speed lens like the Nikon 200mm F2G AF VR2 you can also shoot excellent images in dim conditions.
