Guide to Choosing the Right Bike For You

Modern society is becoming more and more conscious of health and the environment, and with good reason. One way that many people are taking a positive approach to this is by turning to bicycles as a method of transport, a form of exercise and for recreation. In recent years the cycle market has boomed; with so many shapes, sizes and models out there, how do you know what to go for?

Bicycles have been around for centuries and have constantly evolved to give cyclists the chance to take their bikes to new terrains and cater for any task. In more recent years, mountain bikes have been an extremely popular choice for many cyclists. The main appeal of mountain bikes is their ability to tackle most terrains with their big tyres, multiple gears and sturdy structures. Although originally designed to tackle mountainous terrain (hence the name), not everyone that owns a mountain bike takes to the great outdoors. Many people use them for everyday travelling around the city, but is this the best option for the task?

However, all may not be as it seems. If you’re mainly sticking to the roads when you cycle, there may be a more suitable option out there. Mountain bikes tend to have big, chunky tyres to provide the most amount of grip possible and to avoid pesky punctures. However, on concrete this extra grip could actually make cycling more difficult. That’s where slick road tyres come into play:

Road bikes and single speed bikes have become somewhat a fashion accessory for city dwellers in recent years. Retro bikes are back in fashion with vintage models selling for big bucks. Not only are they stylish, they’re practical. Slick road tyres and a single speed that is suitable for getting around the concrete city quickly and with ease.

Another great option, particularly for the concrete city is the BMX. Born in the 1970s, the BMX was originally designed for dirt track racing and over the years they have become a great multi-purpose bicycle. Many people opt to use them for hopping around the city because of their small size and sturdy structure. However, they are not the most comfortable of rides but are the perfect option if you want to perform stunts and tricks. Before you purchase any bicycle, you should carefully consider how you plan to use it. What are your requirements? How often will you use it? What terrain will you be on? Consider these factors and you’ll be sure to choose the right bike.

Once you’ve chosen the right bike for the job, make sure you have all the necessary safety equipment before you set out. We recommend something like the Giro Xen Helmet.

Great UK Cycling Trails

Cycling is a great way of seeing new places. Not only do you get the satisfaction of being active, but you also get to see things at a better pace for taking everything in, as well as having a better chance of seeing wildlife than in a car. But it helps to know some good routes for cycling to get things started. If you’re lucky enough to live near to one of these locations then they’re definitely worth a look.

The adventurous side of your personality will be well fed if you head off under the canopy of Grizdale Forest. It’s a place that speaks of wonder, with strange artistic installations sitting alongside and amongst some fine natural scenery. The whole of the Lake District is a cool place to get active, but somewhere that allows safe and straightforward exploring for serious off-road cyclists or families alike is Grizdale.

The trail from Bath to Stratford-upon-Avon is a beautiful and well set out route that takes you past some cool old architecture as well as some of the most scenic countryside there is in the UK. It’s also a fairly flat, or at least undulating, road, so you won’t tire too quickly. And of course once you’re there you’ll find plenty of opportunity for refreshments in Stratford’s pretty pubs. The town enjoys a great deal of tourism during the height of summer, so expect crowds once you get there, but there are places to leave your bike if you’re thinking of taking in a play.

Taking a trip to the Forest of Dean brings you in touch with some wonderfully accessible trails that are perfect for young children and offer variety as well as comfort. You’ll find that the disused railway lines that make up the bulk of the trail are perfect for some easy riding, and there are some great spots of picnickers too, so if your idea of exercise involves a hamper or sandwiches you won’t be disappointed.

This is just a small demonstration of the trails out there. Everyone has their own personal favourite if they’ve been cycling for a while, and the best way to get into them is to go to as many as possible, but these few are a really good start.

Hottest Contour Is Called Contour+ or Contour Plus

It appears the cat is out of the bag. A bike rumors world wide web web site has leaked what is Contour’s latest camera, the Contour+ into the wild. The look will probably be precisely as the best selling Contour HD 1080p and Contour GPS but the guts have been stuffed to the extreme with enhancements, often with valuable functions that users have been clamoring for.

Contour+. Is that the name of Contour’s followup to the well-liked Contour GPS helmet camera? If the most recent secret sighting is actual then it seems you keep everything from version but with out the GPS. Seeking at the pic here it appears the new Contour+, as it genuinely is assumed has the following new functions not inside the existing Contour HD 1080p.

Earlier, helmet cameras had been concerned with video resolution and lightweight toughness, now that video resolution has been reached, focus on other problems immediately after the image has been captured, elements like sound, ease of use are now the manufacturer’s main concern..

What’s the Plus in Contour+? Here is almost certainly what we can assume from the cutting edge Contour +.

-HDMI port for live streaming -wide 170 degree lens -integrated Bluetooth radio -greater image quality -external mike port -red “on” LED when the the recording switch is slid forward -new pass through usb and HDMI ports for both charging and playback

Improved Sound and External Microphone What will likely be widely applauded from Contour users will be the much better sound performance of the Contour+, or rather the potential forbetteraudio. The Contour+ has a external microphone connector for plugging in far much better microphones than the tinny built in mic inside the Contour.

HDMI Output HDMI is the hot new tech feature bullet point for any video camera coming out nowadays. The Contour Plus follows that trend by incorporating HDMI output with a tiny connector on its back panel. You’ll be able to basically attach a HDMI cable on the back of the camera and plug it straight in to your compatible HDTV or pc for immediate video reviews after a lengthy shooting day for bragging rights or previews before editing on your computer.

iPhone As Your Viewfinder An LCD viewfinder is among the most demanded functions of the Contour cameras. With the Contour+ , the camera business has finally addressed users’ demands for a good viewfinder. In contrast to other helmet camera manufacturers’ solutions, Contour has come up with a clever invention giving it the top LCD viewfinder of any action camera available. Incorporating a bluetooth radio inside the already diminutive case, the Contour+ uses your iPhone as an LCD viewfinder via a free iPhone app (soon for Android).

Wider Camera Angle A unique aspect which set helmet cams apart from standard video cameras are the really wide angle lenses useful for capturing far more of a scene and bringing the viewer into the action. Frequently, the wider the lens angle, the more tension in the video. The Contour+ has a wider 170 degree lens, surpassing the 135 degrees of its’ predecessors like the Contour GPS.

If rumors are accurate, then this enhanced, nonetheless required Contour HD update could be coming in May or June. Just in time for the outdoor sports season.

Find out more details about the Contour Plus with wireless LCD and how to get the utilization of contour cameras, visit pointofviewcameras.com and the Contour page for complete specs.

Utah’s Popular Slickrock Bike Trail

[I:http://www.picmig.com/freedownloads/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/RodBesler5.jpg]

The World’s Most Popular Mountain Bike Trail

Moab, Utah has become the hotbed of the mountain biking world. And the Slickrock Trail is Moab’s most popular trail. With more than 100,000 visitors each year, it is probably the world’s most popular mountain bike trail. Actually named the Slickrock Bike Trail, it was first ridden by motorcyclists in 1969. But mountain bikers have overwhelmed it.

The barren red sandstone which draws mountain bikers from all over the world is called slickrock. But that’s not really an accurate term. Metal-shod horses ridden by early settlers couldn’t walk over the rock. They couldn’t gain a foothold on it. Hence the name “Slickrock”. But the modern fat rubber tires on today’s mountain bikes allow riders to seemingly defy gravity.

More Than Just a Bike Trail

The Slickrock Trail is more than just a bike trail. It is located in an area of extreme beauty. Both up close and in the distance. Of course it’s important - for your own well-being - to know where your front tire is pointed. And the desire to come out of the ride in one piece often makes it difficult to enjoy the scenery.

The backdrop of the beautiful La Sal Mountains is stunning. As are the dramatic cliffs of the Colorado River. You may find your eyes wandering towards the scenery rather than focusing on where your front tire is going. The trail crosses the top of an elevated sandstone plateau corralled by cliffs sculpted by the Colorado River and its tributaries. Enjoy the scenery but be careful.

Challenging. Exhilarating. Aggravating.

The Slickrock Trail is only 12 miles (19 km) long. You’ll have to allow yourself 4 hours as it’s a challenging ride. But exhilarating. And aggravating at times. You’ll find yourself shifting gears non-stop. You never seem to get into a comfortable mode.

The Slickrock Trail is rated high technical difficulty and high aerobic requirement. But you don’t have to be an above-average rider … in terms of proficiency and fitness … to ride this trail. You may just have to hike over some of the tougher spots.

A series of white dashes and dots painted on the rock mark the Slickrock Trail. The natural tendency is to simply follow this path without question. After riding the trail a few times, you may find that you want to try some of the other routes outside the boundaries of the marked trail. These may require more skill and experience.

Tread Lightly

If you decide to venture outside the marked trail, ride only on rock! The trail runs right through a fragile environment. Desert vegetation fights for its very existence in this harsh environment. The cryptobiotic soils - a brown-black and lumpy crust - give life to a rare and unique mix including bacteria, algae, lichen, mosses, and fungi. This crust is absolutely vital for desert life to exist.

One errant tire track … or footprint … can destroy decades of growth and development. The damage may be irreparable. Remember that it takes 50-100 years for the crust to mature and sustain life. And the same amount of time to repair itself.

Beginning mountain bikers often try the 2.3 mile (3.7 km) Practice Loop. It’s much shorter than the main loop but it gives you a feel for it. And, of course, it lets you say you rode the Slickrock Trail. Then if you want more, you can always attack the main trail.

When to Visit

Spring and fall are the best times to bike in southern Utah. Temperatures in mid-summer approach or exceed 100 degrees F (37.7 C). And mid-winter temperatures can reach below freezing. But that doesn’t mean you can’t ride at other times if you’re prepared. Dress for the temperatures. Bring emergency clothing. And bring plenty of water. Dehydration comes on quickly in this dry climate.

Rod Besler is the author of Utah Travel Secrets, an online travel guide telling you about all the amazing things Utah has to offer visitors. You’ll find an uncommon personal perspective there. Download his FREE eBook to discover The 101 Best Things To See And Do In Utah while learning more about the Slickrock trail.

6 Things Starting Mountain Bikers Should Practice

If you want to start your adventure with the sport of mountain biking, there are a few things to make sure you do before you bite off more than you can chew. This sport is full of thrill, but it is not without risk.

Here are a few things you will want to practice, prepare, and test out. A nice beginner hill and some flat land is ideal for what you will be doing below.

While going downhill, you may lose placement on your pedals. Practice removing and replacing your feet on your pedals. Take one off, and then put it back on while pedaling. If you have a clipless, or toe clip foot pedal you want to make sure you have this skill down.

While you are riding, you should have a relaxed body with both your knees and elbows bent. The elbows should only be somewhat bent, and never locked. Your legs should never extend fully while pedaling. Raise your bike seat so that while you are pedaling, your legs extend at most 90 percent and at minimum 70 percent.

Practice coasting on your bike. You should do this while standing on up on your peddles. Don’t sit on your seat, and instead stand up and keep your knees and legs slightly bent. Move your bodyweight toward the back of the bike, which is where it would be while riding downhill.

Next to try is pedaling while standing. Stand up and practice pedalling in this position. This will feel different when pedaling in a higher gear and a lower gear, so practice this in different gears.

Going downhill on a bike isn’t normally smooth sailing. There will be bumps and both your tires may leave the ground temporarily. To practice going off of a bump, find a curb and ride off of it. Go slow at first and then increase your speed until you feel you’ve got it mastered.

Once you have mastered these beginning techniques, you will be better prepared to take it to the next level and begin mountain biking! Remember to have fun, and wear protective gear!

Having excellent fitness helps in the sport of mountain biking. If you want to be able to ride harder and ride longer (and even help prevent injury), starting a solid exercise program is a must! Take a look at the P90x extreme home fitness program, which helps users get fit from home in 90 days.

Purchasing A Mountain Bike For The First Time

Buying a mountain bike for the first time may be overwhelming. If you don’t know anything about what to look for, then you are left clueless, and may make a bad decision. This article will teach you what to look for.

There are mountain bikes for every budget, depending on the quality, style, and retail shop. Because the fancy expensive bikes can be very tempting, make sure that you keep your budget in mind when you begin shopping for a bike. Local bikes shops are the best places to buy the bike you want, as they can guide your selection, make custom adjustments, and will know your bike when you need a tune-up. It is also great for helping out the local economy and supporting small businesses.

Each mountain bike is created with a certain riding style in mind, whether it be cross country, trail, downhill, or pleasure riding. Before going shopping for a new mountain bike, figure out what style would fit your lifestyle and interests, and then talk with a salesperson to find the right bike for you.

There are two different kinds of mountain bikes. One is full suspension (suspension on both the front and rear wheels) and the other is called hard tail (suspension only on the front wheel). A full suspension bike offers the advantage of improved control because it can handle bumps and rough spots better, while a hard tail is more efficient on smoother terrain, and is lighter in weight. The kind of mountain bike you choose depends on what you can afford and what kind of terrain you are going to ride.

There is a variety of components that can come on a mountain bike. Look around and see what kind of components you want to have, and then buy a mountain bike that comes with them.

Fall and winter are the best seasons to buy a mountain bike because the prices will be lower due to an ebb in the biking season. Buying during this time can save you hundreds of dollars and you will find shop owners hungry to make a sale, which might mean an added discount or some bonus bike goodies.

When buying your bike, make sure the dealer is reputable. Some dealers sell overpriced goods to customers that don’t know any better, make sure you go to a dealer that cares about the customer.

Always should you test the bike out before you buy it. It should feel comfortable to ride and feel like a good fit. By test riding it, you ensure you are getting a bike that works for you, and your wallet.

Before you make your purchase, check to see what reviews say. Take a look at reviews done by other owners and see what they think about it.

Want to get into shape for mountain biking and anything else life may throw at you? Check out the extreme P90x exercise program. You’ll get fit, and you’ll probably get really sore after P90x workouts!
