Digital Cameras Exposure Settings Explained

Whenever you hear the term “exposure” it revolves around the amount of light that the sensor takes in for each photo that is taken. This is a crucial part to the process because too much or too little can provide you with an unpleasant photograph. Digital cameras today are built to help determine the correct exposure by utilizing judgment meters. These measure the amount of light and provide the ideal exposure automatically.

The use of light meters is acceptable if you’re just learning about digital photography. It might take a little time to understand the entire process, but throughout the educational process you should experiment with it. Those who do are able to create more interesting photographs, and often times they provide better quality.

There are two main functions present in digital cameras, which are used to determine the exposure. The first is shutter speed, and this revolves around what how long the sensor is exposed to the light source. When it comes to aperture you are looking at the size of the lens. Both of these have specific measurements that are important to understand. The F/stops measure is setup for the lens, while the shutter speed measurement is taken in a fraction of a second most of the time. When you look at the lens, the larger it is the lower the f/stop number. You also have to remember that these controls have other functions, which is why it’s necessary to have more than one exposure control.

Another feature is the single lens reflex (SLR), which helps control the sensitivity of the sensor when it is exposed to light. Then there is the ISO speed, which will have a number somewhere in between 100 to 800. When you put all these together it is called; exposure triangle.

When you feel ready to experiment with manual exposure settings, it is important to remember that if you are changing one of the components - you will probably have to change the other. An example would be taking a photo of a moving object that you wish to freeze and prevent blurring. You choose a faster shutter speed to get the photo you want but you still need the same amount of light, therefore increasing the width of the aperture will make that possible.

By experimenting you can create better photographs of moving objects - the speed of which the camera can not pick up on alone. Over time, through practicing and taking notes of the settings you use, all kinds of special effects can be made for incredible photographs. The process of taking photos of the same scene with different exposure settings is called ‘bracketing’.

Digital Cameras Explained

When you compare today’s consumer electronics technology from their older form counterparts, it is easy to say how deep the different manufacturers evolved each of their models every iteration. The biggest forms of evolution usually involve the transition from analog to digital information such as how cassette and video tapes slowly faded away when the popular disc formats reigned supreme. But one of the bigger gaps is demonstrated with the digital cameras as they take a totally different form than the earlier film cameras that many people grew up with. It is fascinating to take a closer look on how these digital cameras work so you can come up with some ideas on what to expect from future models and the future of digital photography.

Digital cameras are just like computers and cellphones in the sense that they have some kind of processor inside. The processor has many roles and it depends on the manufacturer and model of the camera. Basic functions involve the recording of an image the moment the shutter is pressed. This works the same way as film cameras since it makes use of a camera lens and focuses light on the subject. The only difference is that the computer replaces the semiconductor’s role as it must translate the image information into digital data so it can then be transferred to the internal memory or optionally the external memory.

With such a simple process on how digital cameras work, every model still manages to be different from one another because of the way the camera executes this process and type of components the digital cameras use. It starts with the sensor type which determines how good the image quality is and how well it conserves energy. Charge coupled devices (CCD) are the choice for photographers that demand good image quality while Complementary metal oxide semiconductor sensors trade some of the quality for improved energy efficiency.

Just about every big manufacturer of digital cameras emphasizes the resolution of the digital camera in megapixels. Generally, the more megapixels the camera is capable of taking, the better your pictures look on certain perspectives. More pixels in a photo mean less blurry and grainy pictures when you preview them. The differences can be difficult to tell when you reach the double digit megapixel levels but the megapixel count is quite important when you decide to print them on paper. In order to accurately produce the right colors of the image, the camera creates a full spectrum by combining the three primary colors for use as a filter. The exact algorithm varies from different cameras and that is why some cameras provide higher quality than others.

The way digital SLR cameras work is similar but the main difference is the extra step in attaching the desired lens to get a certain effect when each picture is taken. These types of cameras have much larger image sensors and more sophisticated electronics to contribute to their higher image quality and improved color accuracy, contrast, and brightness.

Digital cameras today are outfitted with so many features ranging from automatic image corrections to automatic uploading to online areas. However, film cameras still remain on the top for image quality but the quality for digital cameras is so close that average users may not be able to tell the difference between a printed digital image and a standard film developed photo.

Digital Camera Shopping - Buying Tips

When you start shopping for a camera, there are a few things you should know prior to picking one only because it looked nice.

There a few different “levels” of cameras and here are some key features and tips, below:

Resolution - Camera resolution is specified in megapixels and refers to the number of dots that make up an image. The more pixels a camera has, the sharper and more detailed the photos will be.

Zoom - Zoom can be pretty important if you need to bring an image closer to you without physically having to be close to it.

A camera with digital zoom does not have a zoom at all. It simply increases the size of the pixels as if you’re zooming in on a picture already uploaded on your computer. Digital zoom does nothing.

Lens & CCD Size - Another aspect of taking the most brilliant pictures as possible is the CCD size. Larger CCDs will take more defined photos.

Portable cameras usually have a lens that is perhaps 0.25″ in diameter. These are great for everyday, outdoor use. It’s a camera you can throw in your purse, or pocket.

Almost all mid-range cameras will offer a 1″ lens in diameter. These will take really great pictures outside as well as having little problems with pictures indoors.

A larger camera (SLR) will usually offer a 1.5″ lens in diameter. These types of cameras will produce brilliant pictures indoors and out.

They are also designed to take brilliant pictures in almost all conditions and offer custom film and shudder speed. The megapixels may also be higher. These will be the most expensive models.

Looking for a great selection of cheap digital SLR cameras, shop today!

Factors To Consider When Buying A Digital Camera

These days, digital cameras are offered for a wide range of photographic abilities and in a wide range of prices. People that are looking for a digital camera should be aware of the major differences between the compact digital camera and the SLR camera.

One of the first differences you’ll see is the price. A compact digital camera costs much less than an SLR camera. Even though SLR prices have dropped, you will still pay a minimum of 400 for just the body. Lens prices for an SLR camera cost about 60 for a basic lens all the way up to 250 to 500 for a more powerful zoom lens.

What kind of photographer do you wish to be? That may be the defining answer in your choice. If you take photography seriously as a hobby, you will want to have an SLR digital camera. The range of choices are far greater with an SLR than with a compact digital.

It the size of the camera holds an important spot in your choice, be aware that you will not find an SLR that will fit into your pocket. Compact digital cameras are more compact and can go just about anywhere. An SLR digital camera has a removable lens and although lighter than in the past, still will not be slid into your pocket or purse.

If you intend to use your digital camera to shoot videos, the SLR might not be the right choice. The SLR doesn’t have an autofocus feature to keep fast moving objects within the viewfinder. A compact digital camera has an autofocus that allows you to shoot video of fast moving objects and sporting events. However, an SLR camera provides superior video quality that is suitable for viewing an HDTV.

In some instances, a compact digital camera offers a wide zoom range. They are available with a 10x or 15x zoom. The compact digital camera has an electronic lens that is pushed in or out by adjusting a lever or pushing a button. On the other hand, the digital SLR has a zoom that is fully manual, which offers a distinct advantage. This feature allows you to zoom as quickly or as slowly as necessary to get exactly the shot you’re after. With an SLR digital camera, you won’t have to wait for your zoom to be electronically changed.

The SLR can reach the same range with two lenses. One is the wide angle lens and the other is the wide zoom lens. Some hobbyists or novice photographers might find the cost of these lenses rather prohibitive. Even though the compact zoom doesn’t offer the advantages of an SLR, it is more economical.

If you are a seasoned photographer and love your digital camera but want more, it may be time to step up to an SLR camera. You can take the same shots you would with the film cameras to get the right focus, light and angles that you desire. Shop wisely, check reviews on the body you are considering and join some of the sites on the internet that have a wide range of photographers willing to share their expertise

Digital Camera Pixels

Canon new lenses are also exceptional. Canon’s Digital Rebel was a market success, and the company’s new Rebel XT is also hitting good reviews. The previous camera was 6.3 megapixels, the new one is 8.0 and it’s a little smaller as well.

ISO settings run from ISO 100 to ISO 1600, with an additional level called Hi 1, which is about equivalent to ISO 3200. For white balance, you can rely on auto, or chose Fluorescent, Direct Sunlight, Flash, Cloudy, and Shade presets, or use a white or gray card to manually set a white balance level.

Capture NX is designed to appeal to a broad range of consumers. Users with compact digital cameras such as Nikon’s COOLPIX series will enjoy the simplicity of using U Point technology to quickly enhance their JPEG pictures, eliminate any red-eye using the Automatic Red-Eye Correction tool and even resurrect underexposed images with the software’s D-Lighting feature.

But while that might appeal to the small handed and nimble, the XT’s compressed, lightweight, and slightly chintzy-feeling frame will be a hindrance to others who prefer a solid grip and a balanced camera body–particularly if they’re using a lens any heavier than the mediocre 18mm-to-55mm f/3.5-to-f/5.6 unit included in the kit.

Autofocus can be continuous when the LCD is on or single autofocus is activated by a half press of the shutter release. Focusing can also be performed manually in which case the distance is indicated on both LCDs and can be visually confirmed on the color LCD with the peaking function. Auto focus gets me frustrated at times. It is also a bit heavy after a long day.

On some models, this readout may also be viewed on the LCD screen. Digital SLR cameras are the tool of choice among the majority of professional photographers but some people have found them to be complex or bulky. With the D40x, consumers dont have to sacrifice the quality of their pictures anymore.

Is This Digital Camera Better Than The One You Just Paid For?

If you’re trying to become a professional photographer you might want to ditch the old camera and buy yourself a brand new SLR. Don’t worry about choosing the wrong camera because below you’ll find a great set of instructions that you’ll find very useful while shopping.

Well, there is one thing that is hard to fake online, and is actually pretty easy to find online, if you know where to look. That one thing is consumer choice.

By consumer choice, I mean of course what are the people buying. We as a consumer society, vote with our dollars, as just about any product that finds favor with the masses will continue to make it’s manufacturers rich.

I was quite pleased with the photograph image quality. An extra bonus, is the ability to manually adjust saturation contrasts and sharpness. Standard with many cameras and the canon, are the JPEG compression size settings.

One thing I’ve complained a lot about in the past, is slow shutter response in many compact cameras. It’s not really an issue with the A590. Surprisingly, for someone used to the speed of an SLR that’s quite a statement. If you practice a little bit, and get the hang of manually focusing your photos you’ll experience an even faster shutter performance speed.

Here’s a few select choices I found from on of my favorite shopping sites. Most of these are compact cameras, as that’s by far the most popular category.

The A590 provides some nice control when it comes to your camera’s flash. Not including the automatic flash, there are three separate levels of flash intensity plus a preflash option. If you happen to have some external flash gear from other cameras, you be able to use that gear with the A590.

The A590 doesn’t make the same mistake as many other compact cameras, and sacrifice the optical viewfinder for a larger LCD. So even if you’re in a situation, where using the LCD is not a good option the viewfinder will come in handy.

You won’t spend a fortune on batteries with this camera. According to the manual, with a couple of good rechargeable AA’s you should get up to 500 shots before during a recharge. All in all, a very good value for the money.

Is This Digital Camera Better Than The One You Just Bought?

While it’s quite often hard, to get a decent fair, and unbiased review on anything online, digital cameras seem particularly tricky. There’s no shortage of fly by night websites hawking the next greatest camera on the planet, since Polaroid invented the Polaroid.

SLR stands for single-lens reflex and if you’re ready to make the big step toward it a 35mm will help you along the way. This is the best camera format for high-quality images and it’s way better than wide-angle lenses, macro lenses or even zoom lenses.

Unlike some of its competitors, the image stabilization is not a gimmick here. I was able to get pretty clear and concise photos, even when taking pictures several stops under the preferred shutter speed. The good news about this, is that it’s quite possible to get decent indoor pictures without resorting to the cameras flash even at 35-50mm f2.8 1/10.

I was quite pleased with the photograph image quality. An extra bonus, is the ability to manually adjust saturation contrasts and sharpness. Standard with many cameras and the canon, are the JPEG compression size settings.

The image provided by AF cameras is not exactly what you’d hoped for and that’s mainly because of the limited range of their infrared beams. The autofocus is not very silent compared to the manual focus. The AF lenses are very often surrounded by plastic components that are not as durable as you may think.

You’re in for a real treat, if you’re the type of photographer that enjoys fiddling around with the manual modes on your camera. The A590 shows off much improved features over previous Canon Powershots in the A series. Including, a light meter, that makes suggestions for the ideal exposure settings. The resulting exposure, can be tweaked to the adjustment of the aperture and shutter speed. The M mode, is also much improved, in large part by the light meter.

The A590 provides some nice control when it comes to your camera’s flash. Not including the automatic flash, there are three separate levels of flash intensity plus a preflash option. If you happen to have some external flash gear from other cameras, you be able to use that gear with the A590.

Last but not least, a manual camera is considerably cheaper than an autofocus one.

To sum up all the above it’s very important for you to know exactly what type of focus you want to use because otherwise you’ll be spending a lot of money on a camera that won’t be able to make the pictures you want.

Putting A Great Digital Camera In Your Hands

Where is the best place to buy a digital camera? Some would suggest online stores have the best prices, while others wouldn’t dare to buy anything over the internet. It’s true that the internet has it’s fair share of scam artists ready to take your money and give you nothing in return. But, that could also be said of the the real world as well. When looking for the best digital camera store, the smart consumer will leverage both the world of bricks and the world of clicks to get true value for their dollar.

The internet is bursting at the seams with information on digital cameras and just about any other product your imagination can dream up. And some you can’t ;) The biggest problem with shopping online, is condensing and sorting all the relevant information while at the same time filtering out all the superfluous noise surrounding it. Online is a great place for price comparison shopping. There are literally hundreds of sites, that do nothing buy compare prices for every make and model of digital camera available. Armed with these prices the informed consumer has a definite advantage when they visit their local digital camera store.

But, the internet can’t give you everything you need in your search for the perfect digital camera. Specifically and most importantly, you can’t pick up and hold a digital camera without actually going to a real world store.

If you plan to buy a camera, you will find the buying guide very useful. For the first time user, this guide can be beneficial. If you already have a digital camera and want something comparable or better, the guide is where you should look.

I personally like the idea of taking your own memory cards with you when you go. That way, you can take your pictures home with you, print them out, load them up on your computer, or view them on that big honkin’ HD LCD you bought yourself for Christmas. Once you’ve done this with a few worthy cameras, you should get a pretty good idea of which camera has the best image quality. It’s nice to be able to make that comparison without the pressure of a salesperson looking over your shoulder.

It is good to have the newest and most popular brand of camera. You must be aware that maintaining a digital camera is quite expensive. You must be ready to spend for those expensive lenses and unit upgrades. Before you know it, your camera will be worth your fortune.

You must take note that taking captivating pictures cannot be achieved by a camera alone. Getting which is the best digital camera will not ensure that you will get to take the most brilliant photos. You should apply the learnings you gathered throughout your photo shoot sessions. You, alone, have the control to your lenses. You are the one who will choose the right angle and the right timing in shooting that breathless view you want to capture. Visiting photography websites, attending forums and seminars and listening to experts advises will help you enhance your photographic creativity. Patience and strong will should lead you to your art gallery. Remember, photography is an art.
